Performance art resists the commodity structure of the art market by design — which makes it genuinely hard to build a career in. Performance artists in the Praxis community have developed specific strategies for the specific challenges of the medium.
What performance artists in the Praxis community are working on
Documentation as practice. For performance artists, documentation is not a secondary concern. It’s what allows the work to circulate, to be collected, to be written about. Members have developed thoughtful documentation strategies that serve the work rather than reducing it.
Grants and institutional funding. Performance work is often more fundable than it looks. The grant landscape includes significant support for time-based and ephemeral practices — and members help each other find and apply for those opportunities.
Institutional programming. Curators who program performance think differently from commercial gallerists.
